Bookkeeping for Indian investors and F&O traders

Every statement posted. Every rupee reconciled.

CapBooks reads your bank, card, broker and demat statements, suggests what every line is, and builds a Trial Balance, P&L and Balance Sheet. Capital gains, intraday results and F&O turnover are worked out lot by lot. It runs on your own computer.

  • Runs on your computer. No bank or broker logins.
  • Nothing posts until you confirm it.
  • One Excel workbook for your CA, or push to Zoho Books.

    How it works

From downloads to books in four steps.

Indian banks and brokers export messy files. CapBooks finds the header row, works out debits and credits, checks every running balance and remembers each layout, so next month's file imports in one go.

    Upload

Bank, card, tradebook and holdings files in CSV, Excel or PDF, password-protected included. Overlapping statements are fine; lines already in your books are skipped.

    Check

See exactly how each column was read before anything is imported. Fix a column with one dropdown and save the layout for next time.

    Confirm

Suggestions come from your rules, transfers matched between your own accounts, and Indian narration patterns. You confirm, and only then is a journal posted.

    Read

Trial Balance, a P&L in tax-friendly sections, a Balance Sheet with your capital account, and one Excel workbook for your CA.

    What it handles

Built around how Indian portfolios actually look.

Several bank accounts, a card or two, a home loan, two brokers and a demat. CapBooks keeps them in one set of double-entry books.

    Bank and cards

    Every line has a home

    • Own transfers matched across your banks within three days, posted once.
    • EMIs split into loan principal and interest.
    • Dividends, interest, tax payments and salary recognised from narrations.
    • Card bills matched to the card statement.
    • Reconciled to the rupee against each statement's closing balance.
    Equity

    Lot-by-lot capital gains

    • FIFO per demat, the way the tax law requires.
    • Intraday split from delivery: same-day buy and sell is speculative.
    • Long term after 12 months, with the 31 Jan 2018 grandfathering applied for tax.
    • Splits and bonuses adjust quantity and cost.
    • Holdings checked against your demat statement by ISIN.
    Futures and options

    Premium, expiry, turnover

    • FIFO per contract, long and short.
    • Option premium held on the balance sheet until you close.
    • Expiries settled, with a prompt for any future's settlement price.
    • Weekly and monthly symbols read straight from your tradebook.
    • Turnover by the ICAI method for every financial year.
    Reports

Books your CA can work from

    • P&L in sections: F&O, intraday, capital gains, dividends and interest.
    • Balance Sheet with your capital account and drawings.
    • Trial Balance that drills down to every journal.
    • One Excel workbook with every schedule.
    • Push to Zoho Books as drafts, never sent twice.

    F&O turnover

Three numbers called turnover. One counts.

Broker reports often show the value you traded. For the tax-audit question your CA works from turnover as the ICAI Guidance Note defines it: the sum of absolute profit and loss on each closing trade.

    ContractSideQtyOpenCloseP&L ₹

Sample trades. Click any P&L to flip it between profit and loss: net P&L moves, turnover doesn't.

    Net P&L₹25,000

    Profits less losses.

    Turnover, ICAI method₹31,000

Sum of absolute P&L on each closing trade. CapBooks reports this one.

    Value traded₹26,21,000

Premium plus contract value, buy and sell. Not your turnover.

CapBooks review queue with suggested categories for bank lines

Every bank line gets a suggested category and account, with where the suggestion came from.

    Privacy

Your statements stay on your computer.

CapBooks is a local app. Your books live in one file on your machine, and you decide what, if anything, leaves it.

    No logins to your bank

You upload files you downloaded yourself. CapBooks never asks for bank, broker or demat passwords.

    PDF passwords forgotten

Used once to open a statement, never saved.

AI only if you turn it on

Add your own Anthropic API key and Claude suggests categories for lines your rules don't recognise. Only the masked narration, direction and amount are sent. UPI-PRIYA S-priya@okhdfc[ID]-HDFC0001234######

    You confirm everything

AI and rules only suggest. A journal is posted when you confirm the line, and undo removes it.

    Who it's for

For people whose ITR has more than salary.

    Investors with several accounts

Salary, two or three banks, a card, a demat and a few mutual funds, in one set of books.

    F&O and intraday traders

Business income kept apart from capital gains, with turnover ready for the audit question.

    Families and HUFs

One set of books per PAN, with drawings and gifts recorded properly.

    Chartered accountants

Clean, reconciled books from investor clients, with every number traceable to a statement line.

    Questions

    Before you ask.

    Is this tax advice?

No. CapBooks keeps your books. Your chartered accountant applies the tax rules and files your return.

    Does it file my ITR?

No. It gives you and your CA the schedules the return needs: capital gains by lot, intraday results, F&O turnover, and income by type.

    Which banks and brokers work?

Any that let you download statements as CSV, Excel or PDF. You confirm how the columns map once per layout, and later files with the same layout import directly.

    Do I need Zoho Books?

No. Your books and reports work on their own. Zoho Books is an optional place to send journals once you're happy with them.

    Does it use AI?

Only if you add your own Anthropic API key. Claude then suggests categories for lines your rules and the built-in patterns don't recognise, from masked narrations. Nothing is posted until you confirm it.

    What does it cost?

Pricing isn't set yet. Early-access members will hear first.
